To deeply study, publicize, and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the important instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping on carrying out Lei Feng volunteer activities, and to guide young students in further practicing the spirit of Lei Feng in the new era while promoting the values of “dedication, friendship, mutual assistance, and progress” in volunteer service, the School of Foreign Languages, under the leadership and support of the university’s Youth League Committee, diligently organized the “Study the 20th National Congress, Always Follow the Party, Youth Volunteer Action” Lei Feng Volunteer Service Activities. The summary of the activities is as follows:
From February 21 to 23, members of the NWU Youth Lecture Team visited Fenglin Community to carry out volunteer practices with local primary school students. Through a variety of class activities such as quiz games with prizes, simple drawing demonstrations, handicraft making and storytelling, the lecture team educated the children on social responsibility and civic awareness, introduced knowledge of China's outstanding traditional culture, and conducted patriotic education sessions. These efforts aimed to nurture the children's civic qualities, broaden their cultural horizons, strengthen their patriotic feelings, and effectively help them “fasten the first button in life”. The activities planted seeds of “truth, kindness, and beauty” in their hearts.
On March 20, the School of Foreign Languages’ “RED Memory” interpretation team presented the Gonghe Pioneers Exhibition to over 50 participants of the fourth session of the school’s Youth Marxism Training Program. Through detailed storytelling, they highlighted the extraordinary contributions of two prominent international friends, Helen Foster Snow and Rewi Alley, who stood in solidarity with the Communist Party of China and the Chinese people through trials and tribulations, contributing significantly to China’s revolution, development, and reform efforts. This activity guided the trainees to trace the challenging journey of the Chinese revolution, deeply honor revolutionary heroes, enhance their understanding of the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, and foster a correct perspective on major-power diplomacy.
On March 18, the Youth Development Service Center of the School of Foreign Languages invited Yang Jingjing, a member of the 23rd Graduate Volunteer Teaching Corps of Northwest University and a 2022 graduate student in Foreign Language and Literature, to share her volunteer teaching experiences with the 2022 undergraduate cohort. She introduced the history of the Chinese Youth Volunteer Poverty Alleviation Relay Plan, the Graduate Volunteer Teaching Program at Northwest University, its recruitment process, and her personal teaching experiences. Her sharing inspired the students to appreciate the real significance of education and the profound meaning of “spending a short year doing something unforgettable for a lifetime”.
From March 11 to 17, the Youth League Committee of the School of Foreign Languages organized a week-long “Clean Plate Campaign” check-in activity, with over 100 participants completing more than 600 check-ins. This initiative aimed to promote the “Clean Plate Campaign” on campus by combating food waste, advocating for civilized dining, and fostering an atmosphere where waste is shameful, and thrift is honorable. It encouraged the transformation of the campaign into a daily habit, making it a conscious action for everyone and embedding Lei Feng's spirit of frugality into both minds and practices.
On March 29, the Student Union of the School of Foreign Languages introduced an innovative approach to Lei Feng volunteer activities by utilizing a “blind box” format. Students randomly selected blind boxes and completed the volunteer tasks inside. The blind boxes were categorized into “Volunteer Service Boxes” and “Knowledge Quiz Boxes”. Students who selected the “Knowledge Quiz Boxes” created impromptu poems about Lei Feng’s qualities or participated in mini quizzes, while those who picked the “Volunteer Service Boxes” donated their idle items to charity. This unique youth volunteer activity saw enthusiastic participation, allowing students to experience and internalize the essence of Lei Feng’s spirit.
This series of Lei Feng volunteer service activities effectively leveraged the unique disciplinary characteristics of the School of Foreign Languages, integrating the “Labor+” educational philosophy into volunteer service. The projects covered a wide range of fields, including community service, volunteer interpretation, rural revitalization, campus civilization, and public science education, with over 330 individual service instances. The activities demonstrated a significant social impact, showcasing the youthfulness and sense of responsibility of foreign language students while setting an example of Lei Feng’s spirit and promoting the ethos of contemporary volunteerism.
