I. Introduction to the School
The School of Foreign Languages (School of Regional and Country Studies) at Northwest University, originally the Department of English Language and Literature, was established in 1924, making it the earliest foreign language discipline in the western region of China. Renowned linguists and translators such as Wu Mi, Chu Dagao, Shui Tiantong, Zhong Zuoyou, and Cao Jinghua once taught here, and the famous broadcasting artist Qi Yue studied here. During the 1952 departmental adjustments, part of the department merged with Peking University, while another part became the foundation for Xi’an International Studies University and Yan'an University’s foreign language departments, leading to the suspension of the foreign language department. In 1979, Northwest University reestablished the foreign language department, and in 1988, it founded the College English Teaching Department. At the beginning of 2000, Northwest University formed the School of Foreign Languages by merging the Department of Foreign Languages, the College English Teaching Department, and other related foreign language teaching units within the university. In 2023, the School of Regional and Country Studies was established and now operates jointly with the School of Foreign Languages.
The school offers one first-level discipline master’s degree authorization point in foreign language and literature, and three master’s programs in English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, and Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, as well as a professional master's degree authorization point in Translation (MTI). Currently, there are two research centers: the Institute of Regional and Country Studies and the African Research Center. Over the past five years, the school has effectively implemented an organized research work mechanism, encouraged faculty to actively engage in scientific research, and resulted in a series of high-level achievements. These include six national social science projects, four Ministry of Education projects, two projects from the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, five provincial social science projects, one key project from the Xi'an Social Science Fund, four key projects for international communication capacity building, one soft science project from the Department of Science and Technology, and three key projects from the Social Science Association. Additionally, faculty members have published 23 translated books, five monographs, and four textbooks; authored eight papers in authoritative journals and 11 papers in core journals.
In terms of teaching achievements, the school has also maintained a good growth trend over the past five years. These achievements include one professional degree case project approved by the Ministry of Education, two provincial professional degree teaching case projects, one first prize for Foreign Language Teaching Achievements in Shaanxi Province, one second prize for Graduate Education Achievements in Shaanxi Province, one provincial project on degree and graduate education research, and two provincial higher education teaching reform projects. The school has been selected for provincial demonstration courses and teaching teams in curriculum ideology and politics, and one course has been approved as a provincial first-class course. The school has signed framework cooperation agreements with several universities, including Aberystwyth University and the University of Essex in the UK, Southern Utah University, Brigham Young University, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the USA, to fully leverage each other's strengths and conduct intercollegiate talent training and academic exchanges.
