To further enhance the quality of our graduate student training and clarify the basic requirements for each stage of their development, the school held its third graduate advisor work meeting of the semester on the afternoon of June 12 in the conference room on the fifth floor of the West Academic Building. The meeting was chaired by Dean Cao Ruonan.

Cao Ruonan began by reporting on the thesis proposal defenses for the 2022 cohort of professional master’s students and the thesis defenses for the 2021 cohort. She emphasized the importance of strict quality control starting from the thesis proposal stage. From translation practice results to proposal reports, students must adhere to standardized formatting requirements set at both the university and school levels. Content should be well-crafted, focusing on the significance of the topic, the quality of translation, and writing skills. For students who exhibit improper or careless attitudes, prompt and serious action should be taken. Additionally, Cao reviewed the Basic Requirements for MTI Theses recently released by the National Steering Committee on Translation Education, and explained the similarities and differences between the old and new standards in areas like language choice, thesis structure, and skill requirements. She urged advisors to unify their understanding of national standards and to communicate the new requirements to each student starting with the 2024 incoming class. This includes guiding students to recognize the challenging job market, helping them plan their professional studies, and preparing them early for future career opportunities.
