On the afternoon of March 1st, the first pre-defense for graduate students in the School of Foreign Languages was successfully held. 100 graduate students enrolled in 2020 participated, while all graduate students enrolled in 2022 and 2021 attended as observers.
The pre-defense was conducted in professional groups, with all supervisors present as defense committee members to provide guidance. The defense process simulated the procedures of a thesis defense, with each graduate student presenting the key points of their thesis. Defense committee members engaged in multidimensional discussions on issues related to writing format, thesis content, theoretical basis, research methods, and other aspects of the thesis, and urged students to further enhance the academic level and writing quality of their theses. The defense process was compact and orderly, achieving the expected interaction between teachers and students. Additionally, the full participation of newly appointed supervisors and lower-grade students served as effective demonstration and guidance.
In recent years, to improve the quality of graduate education, the school has made efforts in implementing stricter degree application process, constructing better supervisor team, and optimizing the curriculum. The introduction of the pre-defense session in the thesis proposal and defense process is an important measure to proactively identify issues and explore pathways to enhance the quality of graduate education.
