Director Chen Dong from GTCOM Delivers Special Report at Our School

At 14:30 on November 10, 2025, the twelfth session of the “Frontier Lecture Series in the Translation Industry” was successfully held in the Lecture Hall two of Chang’an Campus, School of Foreign Languages, Northwest University. Themed “Review of Translation Practice Cases: Deconstructing and Reshaping Translator Competence,” the lecture was delivered by Director Chen Dong from the Language Services Division of Global Tone Communication Technology(Shaanxi) Co., Ltd., hosted by He Hua, Director of the MTI Center of our School, and attended by all 2025 Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) students.

At the beginning of the lecture, Director Chen Dong used multiple examples of erroneous Chinese-to-English translations to illustrate that the core of translation practice lies in contextualized communication rather than mere linguistic conversion. Subsequently, drawing on her extensive experience in the industry, she emphasized that the key competence translators need to develop is strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. She identified three foundational pillars for enhancing this competence: bilingual proficiency, technological empowerment, and domain specialization. Furthermore, Director Chen Dong discussed the limitations of AI translation and provided a detailed analysis of the multi-dimensional competencies required of translators, including written translation, interpretation, and cultural literacy, as well as professional ethics and behavioral standards.

During the interactive session, students raised questions regarding internship opportunities, domain specialization certifications, and interview requirements. Director Chen Dong addressed each query and engaged in in-depth discussions tailored to the students’ specific needs. In conclusion, Director He summarized the lecture, encouraging students to continuously clarify their competency development goals and accumulate practical experience during their studies. The entire session was highly practical and played a positive role in cultivating students’ practical awareness and skills in translation.
