Northwest University Holds Thematic Class Meeting for Inaugural English (Country and Region Studies) Specialized Program

On the afternoon of September 19, 2025, SFL held a thematic class meeting “Setting the Anchor of Your Major, Embarking on University Life” for the Class of 2025 English (Country and Region Studies Specialized Program) on the Chang’an Campus. The meeting was attended by Sun Qingwei, President of the University; Zhao Zhihou, Party Committee Secretary of the School of Foreign Languages; Dean Cao Ruonan(Head Teacher); Liu Jianbo, Deputy Party Committee Secretary of the school; Ren Huilian, Party Committee Secretary of the School of Country and Region Studies; Dean Han Zhibin, Vice Dean Li Fuquan, faculty representatives, and all students of the class. The meeting was chaired by Dean Cao Ruonan.

First, Wang Yihan, the freshman counselor, reported on the student profile of the Class of 2025 English (Country and Region Studies Specialized Program), the setup of the peer mentoring system, the safety education for freshmen, and their performance during military training.

Professor Han Zhibin, Dean of the School of Country and Region Studies, focused on the discipline’s development, reviewing the 60 years of dedicated efforts and substantial achievements in Country and Region Studies at the university. He emphasized the distinctive advantages of the discipline in focusing on Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa, as well as the strong capacity in faculty development, enabling freshmen to deeply recognize the discipline’s significant value and broad prospects.

Professor Cao Ruonan, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages (Head Teacher), centered on talent cultivation, comprehensively interpreted the experimental class’s distinctive training program. She emphasized that the School of Foreign Languages will focus on cultivating international talents with solid language skills, efficient communication abilities, and a profound sense of social responsibility through multidimensional teaching practices.

Professor Li Fuquan, Vice Dean of the School of Country and Region Studies (Head Teacher), from the perspective of academic guidance, introduced the specific implementation of the “Academic Advisor System,” analyzed the interdisciplinary and research-oriented characteristics of the Country and Region Studies curriculum, and clarified the experimental class’s training orientation, which focuses on cultivating high-quality talents that meet the development needs of the discipline.

During the faculty-student interaction session, the freshmen showed great enthusiasm. They introduced themselves one by one, shared their understanding of the major, and actively raised questions regarding specialized course arrangements, practical teaching schedules, and future directions for further studies and employment. President Sun Qingwei and the attending teachers listened patiently and provided detailed responses, offering professional insights and vivid examples to address the freshmen’s inquiries, creating a warm and harmonious atmosphere.

Following the interaction, Zhao Zhihou, Party Committee Secretary of the School, invoked the adage “Those who aim high may achieve middling results; those who aim for middling results may achieve little” to guide freshmen in emphasizing university planning. He initiated a “Plant a Seed” goal-writing activity. The freshmen earnestly wrote down their personal growth objectives for the university stage. These were collected by the counselor for safekeeping, with an agreement to review their growth trajectories together upon graduation, witnessing the transformation of their youth.

Ren Huilian, Party Committee Secretary of the School of Country and Region Studies, shared her own academic experience as a student in SFL NWU, encouraging the freshmen to cherish their time, seek knowledge diligently, and actively create their own value.

In the concluding address, President Sun Qingwei first congratulated the students on becoming members of the inaugural Country and Region Studies Experimental Class. He pointed out that the university has made thorough preparations in disciplines, structures, personnel, and teaching foundations, and urged everyone to cherish their university years, make full use of various learning resources, master fundamental skills, and broaden their academic horizons. President Sun expressed his aspirations for the students’ university learning and life, guiding them to fully understand the rich connotations of the “Three Guo” fieldsCountry and Region Studies, International Communication, and International Organizations. He encouraged the students with the principle “By grasping the major aspects, the minor ones can also be managed,” advising them to actively integrate personal growth into national needs, align personal interests with disciplinary development, and incorporate individual progress into collective building. President Sun also drew on his own academic experience and personal insights to address and provide guidance on the students’ concerns regarding their studies, daily life, and future career development. In conclusion, he expressed his hope that all students will achieve academic success, grow into well-rounded individuals with moral integrity, intellectual ability, physical fitness, aesthetic sensibility, and a strong work ethic, and become dedicated builders and successors of socialism, living up to the expectations of the nation, society, and the university.

This thematic class meeting not only underscored the university’s significant emphasis on the newly established experimental program but also served as a bridge for in-depth communication among university leadership, faculty, and freshmen. Through this distinctive event, the freshmen have gained clearer professional direction and learning objectives, strengthened their dedication to the field, and been equipped with strong momentum for their upcoming university journey. It has thereby laid a solid foundation for the talent development initiative in Country and Region Studies at the university.
