Tian Hailong, Ph.D., Professor, doctoral supervisor at Tianjin Foreign Studies University. He currently serves as the honorary chairman of the Sociolinguistics Branch of the China Linguistic Society, secretary-general and vice chairman of the Discourse Research Professional Committee of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, deputy secretary-general of the Semiotics Professional Committee of the Chinese Logic Association, and a distinguished professor at China University of Petroleum (Beijing). He is an editorial board member for international academic journals such as the Journal of Language and Politics and the Journal of Sociolinguistics, and he is the chief editor of the Discourse Studies Forum
Abstract:
Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), after more than 40 years of development, has evolved into a widely accepted research paradigm in academia. Its theories and methods originate from linguistics but have been applied across various fields such as political science, history, journalism, and education. Consequently, there are numerous studies claiming to be CDA, yet researchers in CDA share a high degree of consensus on fundamental questions such as what discourse is and how language relates to social existence. This consensus forms the theoretical paradigm that CDA researchers adhere to. Only by following this paradigm can researchers in CDA demonstrate their respective characteristics within their analytical frameworks and utilize conceptual tools according to their research purposes. This lecture will discuss these issues, examine the innovative developments in CDA research, and acknowledge its traditional roots. It will explore how CDA continually evolves through the introduction of new analytical frameworks and conceptual tools. Through this discussion, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of the essential features of CDA research, providing insights for further exploration in the field.
