The Century-Long Evolution of Arab Perceptions of China

Speaker: Professor Xue Qingguo

Xue Qingguo is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Arabic Studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University. He serves as the vice president of both the China Middle East Studies Association and the Arab Literature Research Branch of the China Foreign Literature Research Association. He is also a member of the China Writers Association. His research and translation work primarily focus on modern Arabic literature, Arab culture and thought, and China-Arab relations. He has authored several books, including The Image of China in Arab Culture(阿拉伯文化中的中国形象》) and The Grand Garden of Arabic Literature(《阿拉伯文学大花园》), along with nearly 30 translations and textbooks. His translations of contemporary Arab literary masters, such as Kahlil Gibran, Naguib Mahfouz, Adonis, and Mahmoud Darwish, are particularly popular among Chinese readers. Additionally, he has translated classic Chinese texts, including Tao Te Ching, The Analects, and Mencius, into Arabic for publication. Xue frequently contributes articles to mainstream media in the Arab world, promoting the Chinese voice. He has received several awards, including the “Hamad Translation and International Understanding Award” from Qatar and the “Lu Xun Literary Prize for Translation.”
