What Role Can Foreign Language Scholars Play?

Speaker: Professor Chen Xinren

Professor Chen Xinren is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Foreign Languages, Nanjing University. He is the director of the Institute of Linguistics at Nanjing University and executive director of the Chinese Language Strategy Research Center under the State Language Commission. He also serves as an advisor to the International Pragmatics Association, vice president of the Chinese Logic Society. Besides, he is also the vice chair of the English Teaching Branch, Discourse Studies Committee, and Foreign Language Curriculum Committee of the China English and Chinese Comparative Studies Association. Professor Chen is the editor-in-chief of East Asian Pragmatics (ESCI), Foreign Language Literature Studies (CSSCI indexed), and Chinese Language Strategy (CSSCI indexed), as well as associate editor of Pragmatics (SSCI). Professor Chen is also honorary editor of Researching and Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. His main research areas include pragmatics theory and application, foreign language education and teaching, and language policy and planning. Professor Chen has published over 30 books in both Chinese and English, authored and co-authored over 230 academic papers in both languages. Additionally, he has published over 20 textbooks, some of which have won national-level awards. Professor Chen has been selected for various talent programs, including the Ministry of Education’s “New Century Excellent Talents Support Program”. He has also held visiting professorships at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the University of Huddersfield (UK), Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and other institutions.
