Bao Huiyi, Professor at the Department of English, Fudan University, doctoral advisor, holds a Ph.D. in Medieval Literature from University College Dublin and has been an invited scholar at Institute of Humanities and Social Science, Peking University. Her research focuses on Old and Middle English literature and the interplay between text and image in medieval manuscripts.
Bao Huiyi is the author of the Chinese monographs The Art of Middle English Lyrics and Mirror Maze: The World of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, as well as the English monograph Shaping the Divine: The Pearl-Poet and the Sensorium in Medieval England. Her critical essay collections include Under the Medieval Stars, Scriptorium, and Portrait of a Young Translator, and her poetry collection I Sit on the Edge of the Volcano, among others. Bao Huiyi has translated nearly 20 works of literature and the social sciences, including poetry collections by T. S. Eliot, Elizabeth Bishop, and Sylvia Plath, and novels by Colum McCann, Paul Auster, and Margaret Atwood. She is the chief editor of the book series Frontiers in Medieval Studies, which was selected as part of the National “14th Five-Year Plan” Key Publication Program, and co-editor of textbooks such as European Romantic Literature: A Reader’s Guide and Homecomings and Departures: Selected Poems from China and Australia. Professor Bao has published nearly 30 scholarly articles in leading academic journals, including Foreign Literature Review, along with nearly a hundred articles and book reviews in other journals. She has been honored as a Young Leading Talent in China’s “Ten Thousand Talents Program” and has also been recognized as a Shanghai Pujiang Talent Program scholar. Over the course of her career, she has successfully led and completed multiple national and provincial-level research projects. In addition to her research achievements, she previously taught at Trinity College Dublin and now serves simultaneously as Director of the Center for Chinese and International Creative Writing at Fudan University and Executive Director of the Shanghai Translators Association. She is also the creator and host of the English-language podcast Here Be Dragons.
