I. Introduction to the School
The School of Foreign Languages of Northwest University was formerly known as the Department of English Language and Literature of Northwest University. Established in 1924, it is the earliest foreign language discipline founded in the western region of China. Renowned linguists and translators such as Wu Mi, Chu Dagao, Shui Tiantong, Zhong Zuoyou, and Cao Jinghua have taught here successively; broadcaster Qi Yue once studied here. In 1952, during the reorganization of departments, part of the institute merged into Peking University, while another part became the precursor of the School of Foreign Languages of Xi’an International Studies University and the Department of Foreign Languages of Yan’an University. The Department of Foreign Languages of Northwest University ceased to exist. In 1979, it was reestablished. In 1988, the Department of College English was established. In 2000, the School of Foreign Languages of Northwest University was established by integrating the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of College English, and relevant foreign language teaching units within the university. Starting in September 2025, the School will enroll undergraduates for the English (Country and Region Studies Pilot Program) program.
The school currently has seven departments: the Department of English, the Department of Japanese, the Department of Russia, College English Teaching and Research Department I, College English Teaching and Research Department II, College English Teaching and Research Department III, and Comprehensive Language Teaching and Research Department. It has one first-level discipline authorized to confer master’s degrees in Foreign Language and Literature, with three master’s degree programs in English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, and Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. Additionally, there is one master’s degree program in Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI).

(1) Young Scholars
【Young Scholar Position A】
Young talents who have demonstrated exceptional innovation capability and development potential in academic research, possess influential landmark research achievements in their professional field, and are expected to grow into academic leaders in their field.
Support Measures: Competitive performance-based salary; policy preference in postgraduate student recruitment; assistance in applying for the “Sanqin Youcai Card”; provision of staff apartment, one-time relocation allowance, and research support funding; funding support based on the needs of the recruited talent and the university’s actual conditions.
【Young Scholar Position B】
Talents who have achieved innovative results in their field, can participate in collaborative team research, and demonstrate strong development potential and innovative thinking.
Support Measures: Sufficient cultivation funding provided annually during the appointment period; policy preference in postgraduate student recruitment.
(2) Outstanding Core Faculty
Holders of a humanities/social sciences doctoral degree, generally not exceeding 34 years old, or postdoctoral researchers not exceeding 36 years old, with a good academic record.
Support Measures: Implementation of tiered and categorized internal support initiatives such as the “Youcai Plan”, “Zhongying Young Scholar Plan”, and “Qihang Plan”; green channel for special evaluation of professional titles available to young faculty before or within six months of joining the university; focused training and selective funding for young faculty to help them develop rapidly.
(3) Ziteng Scholars
Outstanding recent or upcoming doctoral graduates under 30 years old who enter the university to engage in postdoctoral research.
Support Measures: More competitive salary and benefits, more ample research funding, and more flexible training models to promote the leapfrog development of the university’s postdoctoral team. Outstanding postdoctoral fellows can directly obtain a tenured faculty position upon completion.
(4) Postdoctoral Researchers
Candidates possessing the basic qualities and potential for scientific research, with a solid academic background; generally under 35 years old, typically recent or soon-to-be doctoral graduates.
Support Measures: Competitive salary and benefits; eligibility to apply for lecturer qualification; direct application for postdoctoral apartment accommodation possible.
