On the afternoon of May 16, 2025, Huang Yulong, Vice President of the Translators Association of China and Director of the CICG Academy of Translation and Interpretation, visited our school at Northwest University. He delivered a lecture titled “Accelerating the Cultivation of Applied Foreign Language Talent and Engaging in International Communication Practices in the New Era.” The lecture was hosted by Su Rui, Vice Dean of the School of Foreign Languages. Over 120 teachers and students, both from within and outside the university, attended the lecture.

Director Huang pointed out that under the new era, China’s international communication work faces both new development opportunities and new challenges. To make Chinese culture truly “go global” and achieve the international communication effect of making the world hear China’s voice, it is essential to thoroughly study the international landscape and China’s development trends, deeply understand the culture of the target countries and their audiences, and place significant emphasis on the concrete outcomes of international communication practices. This is not only an important mission entrusted to foreign language professionals by the new era but also an unshakable responsibility for them. He believes that international communication in the new era can be divided into “static international communication” and “dynamic international communication.” In international communication practices, both channels and content need to be considered simultaneously, with content management shaping the communication channels and further providing strong support for telling China’s story and spreading China’s voice. Director Huang emphasized that in international communication work, foreign languages are the foundation, expertise is the support, and culture is the key. As foreign language professionals, they should actively engage in international communication and translation practices and tirelessly strive to enhance China’s international communication capacity in the new era.

During the meeting, Director Huang and the attending teachers and students had a lively and in-depth discussion on the new situation and tasks of international communication, as well as how to better utilize foreign languages in international communication. Following the lecture, the attendees gained a deeper understanding of the importance and urgency of international communication. They also acquired a clearer understanding of the role and responsibilities foreign language professionals play in international communication. Many expressed their willingness to actively engage in the cause of international communication and contribute to enhancing China’s international status and spreading Chinese culture.
