On the afternoon of November 25, 2025, Professor Liu Xiaofeng from Xi’an International Studies University was invited to the Northwest University Distinguished Lecture. He delivered a special lecture titled “Theory and Practice of Textless Trans-writing Research” for faculty and students. The lecture was hosted by Su Rui, Vice Dean of the Northwest University School of Foreign Languages. Numerous faculty and students from the university attended.

Professor Liu Xiaofeng pointed out that the issue of the “text” in translation is the most fundamental problem. When the “text” of translation is established, the “way” of translation emerges. Starting from the continuum characteristics of human language activities and the realities of translation practice, he noted two basic types: “translation and writing based on a single certain source text” and “translation and writing based on multiple fragmented source texts.” The former is defined as “traditional translation,” while the latter is “textless translation and writing.” Professor Liu further explained that traditional translation theory research, translation talent cultivation, and related textbook development, classroom teaching, translation assessment standards, and quality evaluation systems are all deeply influenced by the paradigm of “traditional translation.” Moreover, peripheral areas such as translation project approval, academic exchanges, publication and dissemination, and even the formulation of national translation policies and technological development also bear strong characteristics of “traditional translation.” In contrast, “translation and writing based on multiple fragmented source texts,” as a common human communication activity, has long been neglected in many of these areas. To address this issue, Professor Liu Xiaofeng proposed taking “translation and writing based on multiple fragmented source texts” as the research object. He systematically constructed a series of core categories and conceptual systems, including “Textless Translation” “Textless Translation Studies” “Textless Trans-writing” and “Textless Trans-writing Studies.” This attempt aims to promote the establishment of a new paradigm in translation studies. Based on a systematic exposition of the theoretical framework, Professor Liu also demonstrated the practical path of “Textless Trans-writing Research” (Textless Trans-writing Studies) by combining specific research directions and case studies. This provides new ideas for advancing the expansion and deepening of translation studies in the new era.

During the interactive session, Professor Liu Xiaofeng engaged in in-depth discussions with the attending faculty and students on topics such as “the practical boundaries of Textless Trans-writing” and “the practical significance of theoretical construction.” Professor Liu patiently responded to the questions raised by faculty and students. Drawing on his own research and practical experience, he provided inspiring and actionable suggestions. This lecture not only enhanced the faculty and students’ renewed understanding of the nature and scope of translation but also clarified the cutting-edge directions of translation theory innovation and disciplinary development. It injected new intellectual vitality into translation studies.
